Your game's daily obligation load: audit the whole thing

Login streaks, daily quests, and events each look fine alone. Added up, your game's obligation load becomes a second job. Audit it as one number.

Every recurring thing your game asks a player to do was added by someone reasonable. The login streak rewards consistency. The daily quests give a session a shape. The event pass keeps the calendar full. The notification brings people back. Each one, looked at on its own, is a sensible feature with a clear justification.

The problem is that nobody adds them up. A player does not experience your login streak in isolation. They experience the login streak plus the daily quests plus the event that ends Sunday plus the three notifications plus the battle pass tier they are behind on. That total is the obligation load, and it is the thing your players actually feel. Most studios never measure it, because no single team owns it.

What obligation load is

Obligation load is the sum of everything your game requires a player to do on a recurring basis to avoid losing something. The key word is "lose." A reward you can collect whenever you like is an opportunity. A reward that resets, expires, or breaks a streak if you miss it is an obligation. Opportunities feel generous. Obligations feel like chores.

The reason this matters in 2026 is that players have responded to the accumulation. Downloads have fallen for four straight years while revenue has climbed, which means players are committing to fewer games and going deeper in the ones they keep. A player who keeps only three or four games is not going to tolerate four of them each demanding a daily checklist. The phrase that keeps coming up in design conversations is "gaming as a second job," and that is exactly what a high obligation load produces.

Regulators have noticed the mechanic too. Under the PEGI rating changes that take effect from June 2026, return-reward features such as daily quests and login streaks now carry a minimum PEGI 7 rating with a dedicated descriptor. The point is not that these features are forbidden — it is that the industry now formally recognises them as a pressure mechanic worth labelling. If your design treats them casually, the rating system no longer does.

Why it compounds instead of adding

You might think four daily asks is simply four times one daily ask. It is worse than that, for two reasons.

The first is that attention is finite. A player has a budget of time and willingness for your game on any given day. The first daily ask spends some of it and feels fine. The fourth ask is competing for what little is left, and it lands as nagging rather than as content. The same feature that delights in a quiet game annoys in a crowded one.

The second is that loss aversion stacks. Each obligation carries a small "if you miss this, you lose something" pressure. One of those is a gentle nudge. Five of them, all firing at once on a busy evening, become a wall of small guilts. The player does not weigh each one calmly. They feel the pile, and the easiest way to make the pile stop is to stop opening the game.

This is why a game can add one reasonable feature at a time and slowly become exhausting without any single decision being wrong.

How to audit it

The audit is a list anyone on the team can build in an afternoon, and the act of building it is usually the eye-opener.

Write down every recurring ask in the game. For each one, record three things. First, the time cost: how many minutes does a diligent player spend satisfying it each day. Second, the cadence: is it daily, several times a day, or weekly. Third, and most important, the miss penalty: what does the player lose if they skip it. A reset streak, an expired reward, a fallen-behind pass, a forfeited event rank.

Then total the time cost, and count how many items have a real miss penalty. Two numbers fall out. One is how many minutes of daily duty your game demands. The other is how many distinct ways a player can feel they have lost something by living a normal life for a day. When studios run this for the first time, both numbers are almost always higher than anyone expected, because each item was justified separately and never summed.

The signals that tell you the load is too high show up in the data before players say anything. Watch session length and session frequency as you add recurring systems — if length climbs while enjoyment-driven sessions do not, you are buying duty, not engagement. Watch your offers: when a player is grinding chores, conversion on anything that asks for money tends to fall, because the game already feels like work and spending on work is a hard sell.

Designing the total down

Reducing obligation load does not mean stripping out features. It means changing how the total feels, and the levers are well understood.

Convert losses into opportunities wherever you can. A streak with catch-up, so a missed day does not wipe weeks of progress, keeps the upside without the dread. An event reward you can still earn at a relaxed pace beats one that punishes a single skipped evening. Flexible milestones that bank progress rather than resetting it turn an obligation back into an opportunity.

Make asks skippable without guilt. If a daily quest can be ignored for a day with no lasting cost, it stops competing for attention on a busy night and becomes something a player does when they want to, which is when it is actually fun.

And own the total at the studio level. The reason obligation load creeps up is that streaks, events, quests, and notifications usually belong to different people or different sprints. Give one person the whole-game view and a standing number to watch. The audit is not a one-time exercise — it is a metric you keep, the way you keep retention or revenue.
