Progression walls and where the paying decision happens

Players rarely decide to spend while looking at a store. They decide at the moment the game stops them, and the store visit is the consequence.

Studios tend to analyse purchase decisions by looking at the store. What converted, at what price, in what position. That is where the transaction happens, so it feels like where the decision happens.

It usually is not. By the time a player opens the store with intent, the decision has already been made somewhere else — at the point in the game where they ran into something they could not get past.

The wall is the design surface

Every game has moments where progress stops. A level that takes several attempts, an upgrade that costs more than the player has, a timer between actions, a piece of content locked behind a threshold. These are the points where a player forms an opinion about whether the game is asking something reasonable.

What happens at that moment determines nearly everything downstream. A player who hits a wall and feels the game is fair goes and earns their way past it, and some fraction of them decide the faster route is worth paying for. A player who hits a wall and feels the game manufactured it goes and does something else, and the store never enters the picture.

The store cannot recover the second case. No amount of pricing, presentation, or offer design converts a player who has decided the obstacle is artificial. This is why store optimisation has a ceiling that studios keep running into: the store is downstream of a judgement that was formed elsewhere.

What makes a wall feel earned

The difference between a wall players accept and one they resent is not its height. It is whether they can see a path over it that does not involve paying.

A wall with a visible non-paying route reads as a challenge. It might take a week of playing. Players who value their time buy past it, players who value their money play past it, and both groups feel the game gave them a real choice. The purchase in that situation is genuinely optional, and being genuinely optional is what makes people willing to make it.

A wall with no visible route other than payment reads as a toll. Even players who can easily afford it often resist, because the transaction is no longer a choice they made — it is a condition the game imposed. Resentment converts poorly and retains worse.

The distinction is not about difficulty. Hard content that is beatable with skill or persistence is fine. It is about whether the player believes effort alone can resolve the situation. A wall that is only passable by waiting a long time occupies an awkward middle: technically free, practically a toll, and read by most players as the second.

Where the wall sits matters as much as what it is

The same wall placed at different points in progression produces very different outcomes.

Early, before a player has decided they like the game, almost any wall is a churn event. They have not invested enough to want past it, and the natural response to friction with a game you are ambivalent about is to stop. Studios that front-load monetisation pressure are frequently measuring their conversion on the small group who stayed and missing that the pressure itself removed most of the population that would have converted later.

Once a player is invested — they know the loop, they have progress they care about, they have a goal — a wall reads completely differently. Now it is between them and something they want, and paying to remove it is a reasonable exchange. The same offer that felt predatory on day one feels convenient on day thirty.

The practical implication is that the placement of your walls is a monetisation decision, not just a pacing one. Where the game stops the player is where you are asking the question. Asking it before they care produces a no and often an uninstall.

Reading walls from data you already have

You can find your walls without new instrumentation. They are the points where players stop.

A progression step with an unusually high drop-off relative to the steps around it is a wall, whether or not it was designed as one. It is worth knowing which of your walls were intentional and which emerged from difficulty tuning nobody revisited, because the unintentional ones are usually the ones losing players without producing anything.

Repeated failed attempts at the same point are the second marker. A player trying the same thing five times is at a wall and has not given up yet. That is the window where an offer is relevant, and it closes — the sixth failure is often the last session.

The third is the sequence around a purchase. If you look at what a player did in the minutes before buying, most purchases trace back to a specific blocked moment rather than to browsing. Mapping which moments produce purchases tells you which of your walls are working as designed, and which ones are just losing people.

The reframing that follows from all this is small but changes where effort goes. The store is where the transaction completes. The moment the game says no is where the decision gets made, and that moment is in the level design, the cost curve, and the pacing — not in the shop.
