Store visit frequency is an intent signal you ignore
A player who opens the shop four times without buying is not failing to convert. They are telling you they want something you are not selling.
Store analytics are almost always a conversion funnel. Visits at the top, purchases at the bottom, a percentage in between. The visits exist as a denominator.
Read on their own, visits are one of the better intent signals in the game, and the pattern of repeat visits without purchase says something specific that the conversion rate cannot.
Repeat visits are deliberate
Opening a shop is not accidental. It takes a tap and it interrupts what the player was doing. A player who does it once might be exploring. A player who does it four times in a week is checking for something.
That behaviour is the closest thing to a stated purchase intention that a game produces. The player has thought about spending, gone to look, and come back to look again. Whatever is stopping them, it is not lack of interest.
Aggregated into a conversion rate, that player is indistinguishable from someone who wandered in once and left. Both count as unconverted visits. The first is a warm prospect with a specific unmet need; the second is noise. Treating them the same is why store optimisation so often stalls — the interesting population is buried in the denominator.
What repeat visits without purchase usually mean
There are a small number of explanations and they are distinguishable with data you already have.
The player cannot afford anything. They are checking whether they have enough yet. This shows up as visits clustered around their balance approaching a particular price point, and it resolves itself when they earn enough — or does not, if the gap is too large and they eventually stop checking. These players need either a smaller entry point or a faster path.
The player is waiting for something. In games that rotate stock, players learn the rotation and check for a specific item. Repeat visits with no purchase and then a purchase the moment a particular item appears is this pattern, and it means your rotation is the constraint on their spending rather than their willingness.
The player cannot find what they want. They are looking for something the store does not contain. This is the hardest to see and the most valuable to know, because it points at a catalog gap rather than a pricing problem. The signal is repeat visits that never resolve into a purchase across a long period, from a player who is otherwise engaged.
The player is price-checking. They know what they want and are deciding whether it is worth it. These often do convert, sometimes weeks later, and interrupting them with pressure tends to push them out rather than along.
The timing pattern is half the signal
When the visits happen matters as much as how often.
Visits immediately after a failure — a lost level, a depleted resource, a blocked upgrade — are need-driven. The player has a specific problem and came to see whether it can be bought away. These are the highest-intent visits in the game and the ones where a relevant offer converts best.
Visits at session start are habitual. The player is checking what is new. These convert on novelty rather than need, which is why rotating stock matters for this group and price matters less.
Visits with no obvious trigger, scattered through a session, are usually browsing. Lower intent, and the population that responds to discovery rather than to solving something.
Separating these three costs one field — what the player was doing immediately before opening the store — and it changes what the visit means entirely. The same player visiting for the first reason and the third reason should not see the same thing.

Turning it into a decision
The useful output is not a new metric. It is a small number of triggers.
A player with repeated need-driven visits and no purchase has a gap between what they can afford and what solves their problem. Something in that gap is the missing product, and if several players show the same pattern at the same progression point, that is a catalog decision rather than a per-player one.
A player whose visits stop after a long unproductive run has given up on the store. That is worth catching before it happens, because re-establishing the habit is much harder than maintaining it. The signal precedes the behaviour by a week or two in most games.
A player who visits often and buys occasionally is functioning normally and should mostly be left alone. It is worth being explicit about this because these players look like an optimisation target — high visits, low conversion — and pressuring them is a common way to lose a steady contributor.
The general point is that the shop is one of the few places a player volunteers information about what they want. Reading only the transactions discards nearly all of it, and the discarded part is where the questions about what to build next get answered.
